Organizers say RI city is a top contender to host America's Cup sailing contest in 2013. Newport is a top contender to host the next America's Cup in 2013, but organizers say they want assurances that the city can speed up and complete renovations on the fort that would serve as a village-type environment for the competitors.

Rhode Island's top economic development official said Sunday that representatives of BMW Oracle Racing and Golden Gate Yacht Club have expressed an interest in holding the next America's Cup in Newport but haven't made a final decision.
