Lonely in Las Vegas?
Mar 08, 2010 19:00 EST
First they went to a movie together. Two Las Vegas women ? a 30-year-old and a 50-something. Total strangers. Totally platonic. And the older woman paid in advance, so there was no awkward exchange of cash. ¶ They saw ÒAvatar.Ó Afterward, they went for hamburgers. They talked about the movie, about the older womanÕs grandchildren. It was a nice time. A three-hour outing that netted the younger woman ? weÕll call her Sarah ? a tidy $100. ThatÕs SarahÕs rate on RentAFriend.com. ¶ It was just a matter of time, right? Friends for sale online. ItÕs the sum of our modern equation: Community decline + Facebook + loneliness + 80-hour-work weeks + anxiety + the Great Recession + PayPal = RentAFriend.com.
RSA Conference: Panel debates expectations of responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities
Mar 05, 2010 11:08 EST
Vendors, end-users and security researchers debated the merits of "responsible disclosure" in a panel discussion this week at the RSA Conference in San Francisco.. The term "responsible disclosure" of vulnerabilities is a misnomer, a phrase created by software vendors who often take so long to release a patch that they are the ones who act irresponsibly, a noted security researcher said this week at the RSA Conference.HD Moore, CSO of vulnerability management firm Rapid 7 and chief architect of Metasploit, said vendors need to start better communicating with researchers who privately report full details of vulnerabilities to vendors. They can start by turning around fixes in a shorter order, Moore said during the six-person panel discussion, which included representatives from Microsoft, Adobe, PayPal and Continental Airlines."What the researcher doesn't see is we've got queued up vulnerabilities that we're trying to get to," said Katie Moussouris, senior security strategist at Microso

Talk about getting stood up at the altar. Thousands of would-be brides and grooms and hundreds of vendors registered for a heavily advertised bridal show that was to start Friday evening at the Hynes Convention Center, but, according to Boston police, the entire event was a sham. Lured in part by the promise that some proceeds would go to earthquake victims in Haiti, about 100 to 200 wedding-industry vendors paid $350 to $4,000 each to operate booths at The Boston 411 Home & Bridal Show 2010, said Detective Steven Blair. He estimated that about 5,000 individuals bought tickets for $10 to $15 to attend. ``What we found out is there is no show,'' Blair said, standing next to an enlargement of a bogus website used by the con artists. ``It was a scam.'' Boston police and the FBI Cyber Crime Unit began investigating the scheme last week, after the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority called authorities. They held the news conference to expose the scam, and prevent thousands of people f
