California State Attorney General Jerry Brown was honored Saturday night by gay rights group Equality California. California State Attorney General Jerry Brown was honored Saturday night by gay rights group Equality California, the 'San Diego Union-Tribune' reported. News that The New York Times Co. has called off a sale of The Boston Globe was greeted with relief by some in the region yesterday. Paul S. Grogan, president of The Boston Foundation, New England's biggest public charity, called the decision ``unqualified good news for the city of Boston and the whole region.'' ``I'm very excited about it,'' Grogan said. ``The Globe is an enormously significant asset to this community, and it was unthinkable for a lot of us to imagine it disappearing or getting so weak that it couldn't perform its civic function.'' Grogan noted that the paper had uncovered political scandals and delved into critical aspects of education reform in the past year. ``The Globe has frankly covered itself with glory under these conditions,'' Grogan said of a period in which the paper was in the awkward position of writing about itself and its fate. He said the ordeal, and the Globe's continued dedication to news coverage, had ``reminded everybody how much it matters to this

He said yesterday that he's not interested only in getting the 18 wins necessary to make him the career leader in Red Sox history, but that he's looking toward 200 and beyond. ``Past that, I can't really tell you,'' said Wakefield, who has 175 wins with the Sox, 189 overall. ``I'm not planning on getting to that point and retiring, if that's the question you're asking. ``I still feel like I can contribute. I still feel like I can compete at the highest level, and I'm going to continue to play as long as my body allows me and as long as the Red Sox want me around. ``I do have those goals in mind, and it's not the only reason why I'm playing. I'm playing because I feel like I can still contribute to us winning a championship.'' Wakefield is likely to sit down with the Red Sox in the near future to discuss his contract.
