The boyfriend of a pregnant woman pleaded not guilty to charges he shot and killed her after showing up at her work with a bouquet of roses.
Roger Jerone McDowell, 34, entered his plea Thursday and was ordered held on $2 million bail.
Dawna Denize Wright, 31, was killed Tuesday at a medical office where she worked as a receptionist. Deputy District Attorney Matthew Greco said the gunman walked past several patients, pulled out a revolver and fired at least three shots into Wright's head. A doctor was also struck in the back of the leg, Greco said.
McDowell was arrested about an hour later when he called police from an apartment and allegedly told them he had killed Wright, the mother of his 8-year-old daughter, police said.
Darlisa McDowell said her brother represented "another person driven over the edge" by family court. She said a judge refused to realize her brother's right to be a parent.
Wright had two other children, and authorities said the couple had an "on-again, off-again" relationship. She was three months' pregnant with McDowell's child.
