Blocked, leaking, or damaged furnaces, chimneys, or flues can release carbon monoxide, which kills about 200 people yearly in the United States. To make sure your furnace is safe, get it inspected annually before you rev it up for the winter. If your utility company doesn’t offer inspections, look up a licensed agent under "Heating Contractors" in the yellow pages or online.
