Bush presses Congress to get busy
President Bush charged that Democrats are wasting time by passing bills he is sure to veto. Nearly a month into the fiscal year, Congress has yet to pass a single annual appropriations bill, Bush said. No Congress has gotten off to a slower start in two decades. Bush asked lawmakers to confirm Michael Mukasey as attorney general and approve funds for Iraq and Afghanistan.
Davis exits Virginia Senate race
Rep. Thomas Davis, R-Va., said he won't run for the Senate seat held by Republican John Warner, who is retiring. The '08 race is now expected to feature two former governors. Democrat Mark Warner is seen as the favorite. Former GOP Gov. Jim Gilmore, who briefly ran for president this year, is expected to be the party's nominee.
Wildfires ebb in Southern Calif.
Thousands of residents forced to flee Southern Calif. wildfires were allowed to return home as blazes subsided. The wind-blown fires charred 490,000 acres and destroyed 1,800 homes. The last evacuees left San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium as the NFL said it would go ahead with Sunday's game between the Chargers and Houston Texans.
