The state of New Mexico would pay for a $250,000 life insurance policy for each of its National Guard soldiers and airmen under a proposal announced last month by Gov. Bill Richardson.
The plan is part of a package of military benefits the governor asked the state legislature to approve as it convened its 60-day session last month.
He also recommended a tax exemption for military retirees and establishing a relief fund for needy military families.
The centerpiece of the proposal, however, is covering the $16.25 monthly Service members' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) premiums for all 4,027 members of the New Mexico Guard.
New Mexico officials believe their state will be the first to offer this benefit.
New Mexico Guardsmen are giving the plan a thumbs-up.
Staff Sgt. Luis Otero of the New Mexico Air Guard's 150th Fighter Wing may have to return to Iraq this year. He said having his life insurance premium paid would make it easier.
"An extra $16 to have in our pocket would be nice, but the thing that the governor is talking about is worth more than $16," Sergeant Otero said. "It's nice to know your family will be taken care of."
Meanwhile, officials in other states quickly took notice. Following New Mexico's lead, lawmakers in at least five other states-Alabama, California, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island-proposed similar legislation.
