Hold On to What We Have

Today the entire country is vitally concerned about the national debt and, particularly, maximum economy in the Defense Department.

Following the Vietnam conflict, the Reserve Forces Policy Board conceived the Total Force Concept as an economy measure and sent it to then-secretary of Deiense Melvin Laird. He directed the military services to implement it. They in turn directed the major commands around the world to employ the Total Force Policy.

But the Air Force has repeatedly and unsuccessfully attempted to eliminate the effective and economical use of the Air National Guard as part of the Total Force Policy. It would like to merge the Guard into the Air Force Reserve. Today, the Air Force even has on its payroll paid consultants who capitulated to these attempts when on active duty.

The entire country needs to help stop the Air Force's latest attempt, the Future Total Force Program, which buys less defense for more money.

In wing walking, you hold on to what you have until you're damn sure of what you are reaching for. We should be doing the same.

Speak Out Again

In February NATIONAL GUARD asked NGAUS members to share their ideas and views on the important issues of the day facing the National Guard.

Some of you accepted the invitation and submitted letters to the editor via e-mail. Unfortunately, the NGAUS e-mail server completely broke down last month, wiping clean the entire staff's in boxes.

The backup system also Jailed. All communications received prior to March 21 were lost. This included letters to the editor and articles and photos from around the world. If you e-mailed a letter, article or any other communication to NGAUS prior to March 21, please resubmit it.
