Papal Edict?
I'm sure by now you've heard about the strange subhead on the cover of the August issue. At first I thought Guard artillery was being brought back into the battle by Papal edict-specifically "new canons." But alas, on page 22 I see it was new cannons. "
In any case, it only confirms my contention that the U.S. military is made of the field artillery and other miscellaneous and assorted units.
Retired Col. George H. Jordan
Minnesota Army National Guard
Counterpoint on the 48th
This is in response to retired Col. John Philbrick's letter in the August issue regarding the 48th Infantry Brigade from Georgia [during the first Persian Gulf War].
I evaluated this brigade at Ft. Stewart Ga., and I was glad they did not deploy with us when the 24th Infantry Division went to Operation Desert Storm.
This feeling was felt by the majority of soldiers in the division. You want the unit on your left to be able to execute their missions.
The good-news story on all of this is how far the Guard has come and now the Guard is a truly professional organization, with good leaders and soldiers throughout their units.
Lt. Col. Todd A Mayer
Ohio Army National Guard
Editor's Note: Colonel Philbrick's letter compared negative comments from some anonymous active-component generals in a May Los Angeles Times article with the Desert Storm experience of the 48th brigade. The 48th was supposed to be the third and roundout brigade for the 24th.
As Colonel Philbrick pointed out, the 48th was replaced by the Fort Benning, Ga., training support brigade, which had a significantly lower readiness evaluation.
