Remembering a Gentle Giant

Page 99 of the April issue of NATIONAL GUARD carried an article that touched my heart-the tribute entitled "Recalling a True Officer and a Gentleman."

It was my privilege to form a close working and personal relationship with retired Col. John Tipton "Tip" Lewis during my four years on the Board of Directors of the Mississippi National Guard Association.

In one of those years, 1976-77, I served as president. It was then that I got to know the heart and soul of this magnificent human being. He loved his country, the National Guard, the association and his fellowman. Even knowing him as I did, I could not have described him better than did retired Brig. Gen. Stephen M. Koper in his tribute. What a gentle portrayal of this gentle giant.

Thank you for the article, thank you for your fine magazine, and thank you for all NGAUS does for the Guard and the country.

Retired Brig. Gen. Mel Scarborough

Mississippi Air National Guard

Editor's Note: We received several similar letters about the tribute to Colonel Lewis. Some wanted to know more about his relationship with the author.

General Koper took over as NGAUS president last summer. He previously coordinated legislative and public relations for the Ohio National Guard and served as executive director of the Ohio National Guard Association.

The general got to know Colonel Lewis while both were running their respective state associations. They also served together on the NGAUS Board of Directors.
