Proud National Guard Spouse
Editor's Note: It's not unusual for a family member of recently deceased NGAUS members to contact the association to cancel their loved one's magazine subscription. Some, however, also like to share. Below is a recent example:
My husband, Col. Charles R. Cobb, a member of the 122nd Support Group in Selma, Ala., died Nov. 24, 2006. I remember his telling me this (below) was the highest award he received in the Guard. It has taken me a long time to do all the things he did for me. I found this in his papers yesterday and I felt it should be sent along with the news of his death. He loved the Guard, and he gave it his all.
Eleanor M. Cobb

She attached the Aug. 1, 1980, state order for the Distinguished Service Medal of Alabama. It reads, in part: "Colonel Cobb began his military career as a recruit on 22 September 1945 as a member of the United States Army and rose through the enlisted ranks to the grade of Sergeant. He graduated from the Reserve Officer Training Corps, University of Alabama, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on 27 May 1950. ... He began a long and distinguished career in the Alabama Army National Guard on 23 August 1951, which culminated as Commander, 122d Support Group, Selma, Alabama.
"During this period ... Colonel Cobb strived for, attained and excelled in technical logistical support proficiency and leadership. The enthusiastic leadership, dedication and technical knowledge of Colonel Cobb is aptfy reflected in the fact that throughout his career every command and staff position he has held has resulted in a marked increase in the readiness posture of his responsible area. His leadership achievements are as a result of his unusual ability to motivate and supervise subordinates to high standards and 'set the example.' ...
"He has been ordered to State Active Duty on several occasions for natural disasters and domestic disturbances which have resulted in much credit being bestowed upon the Alabama Army National Guard. He has served for many years on several Army National Guard committees giving freely of his time, knowledge, and vast experience."
