Three mobilized Army National Guard soldiers lost their lives in January while supporting operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, according to Defense Department casualty reporting.

* Staff Sgt. Shawn F. Hill, 37, of Wellford, S.C., died Jan. 2 in Khowst Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device (IED).

He was a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard's 178th Engineer Battalion, 218th Infantry Brigade from Rock Hill, S.C.

* Lt. Col. Richard J. Berrettini, 52, of Wilcox, Pa., died Jan. 11 in San Antonio of wounds suffered Jan. 2 in Khowst Province, Afghanistan, when his vehicle encountered an IED. He was assigned to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard Medical Detachment Clinic in Erie, Pa.

* Sgt. Matthew F. Straughter, 27, of St. Charles, Mo., died Jan 31 in Baghdad of wounds suffered when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle.

He was a member of the Missouri Army National Guard's 1138th Engineer Company, 35th Engineer Brigade at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
