ITHACA - The Overhead Door Company of Cortland, Inc. says it is opening a sales office in Ithaca on March 5 to better serve its customers in the area.
"The bulk of our customer base is in Ithaca, says Victoria E. Marsted, co-owner.
The Overhead Door Company's location in Cortland previously served Ithaca. Now customers in Ithaca can receive service or repairs more quickly, Marsted explains. With a physical presence in Ithaca, more customers will consider Overhead Door Company for their garage-door needs, she contends.
The 1,200-square-foot sales office, located at 217 Commercial Ave. in Ithaca, will provide residential and commercial garage doors: and garage-door openers, loadingdock equipment, and garage organization products.
The Overhead Door Company self-funded the office's start-up costs, which were $5,000 and included some minor remodeling, Marsted says. She signed a one-year lease with the option to renew for up to three years with landlord William Zikakis.
Employees from, the other divisions of the Overhead Door Company of Cortland Inc., including the Overhead Door Company of Auburn and die Overhead Door Company of Syracuse, will rotate to staff the Ithaca sales office. The company will evaluate hiring additional employees to staff the office in six months, Marsted says.
The Overhead Door Company employs 43 people, including 5 at its Auburn division, 11 at its Cortland division, 15 at the Binghamton division, and 12 at the Syracuse division. Marsted declined to disclose the company's annual revenue. Marsted co-owns the Overhead Door Company with Gregory Marsted, her brother.
The roots of the company can be traced back to the year 1924 when George C. Marsted founded the Overhead Door Company of New York, a manufacturing plant in Canastota, specializing in overhead doors. The plant relocated to Cortland in 1928, according to the company's Web site (www.cortlandoverheaddoor.com). G. Allan Marsted, first became associated 'with Overhead Door in 1931 when a at the age of 21 he joined his father, George, and his-brother Paul,at the manufacturing plant.
Over the course of the next 60 years G. Allan Marsted experienced every facet of the business. In 1964, he guided the Overhead Door Company of New York through a merger with Dallas-area based Overhead Door Corporation, at which time he was elected to the corporation's board of directors and also served the firm as a vice president well past his retirement from the factory in 1969, according to the Web site. In 1969, the Overhead Door Company of Cortland, Inc. built its current offices and warehouse on what had been the site of the original Overhead Door Company of New York manufacturing plant - 33 Cleveland St., Cortland.
