MOUNT AIRY - Authorities were searching late Tuesday night for a young man suspected of shooting two people to death late yesterday afternoon in a house where he lived in the Holly Springs Road community behind the Mt. Airy Airport.
According to WGHP/FOX8 authorites were searching for Shawn Bowman, a man who neighbor's said was in his 20's and lived with his parents at 247 Holly Avenue where the shooting took place.
The suspect was still at large as of 10:20 p.m., Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson said.
Law enforcement agencies in both Surry and Forsyth counties were searching for a blue four-door Chevrolet Cavalier or similar passenger car.
The Surry County Sheriff's Office received a call about the shooting at 5:10 p.m., Atkinson said.
When deputies arrived they found two people, a male and a female shot dead in the kitchen. The sheriff declined to say how old the victims were. He said detectives were waiting on a search warrant needed to help confirm the victims' identities.
"We don't know who they are yet," Atkinson said late last night.
However, conversations overheard on police scanners indicate that the victims were both young people, according to information gathered by WGHP/FOX8.
Neighbors believed Bowman's parents are out of town and that deputies don't think the victims lived at the home, WGHP/FOX8 also reported.
The bodies were still in the kitchen last night as investigators with both the Surry County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation searched for clues.
Atkinson said that detectives were using information from several witnesses, including some who had who heard the shots fired, to piece together what happened.
"We've had several very productive interviews," Atkinson said. "We don't think it's going to be a complicated crime scene."
A neighbor who did not want her name released because the suspect was still at large, said that she had talked to him several times and described him as "nice young man."
"It is so scary," the woman said. "I really hate this. (His) mother is going to be devastated."
