Former Sunday Telegraph editor Dominic Lawson confirmed today that he has signed a contract to write a column for the Sunday Times.

Lawson, who edited the Sunday Telegraph from 1995 to 2005, will file his first Sunday Times column next month.

He will reduce his commitments at the Independent from two columns a week to one every Tuesday and give up his monthly berth in the Independent on Sunday.

Lawson replaces former Times editor Simon Jenkins, who is cutting down on his journalism commitments to become chairman of the National Trust.

"I could hardly be unaware when I was editing the Sunday Telegraph what a powerful force the Sunday Times was. Obviously I am delighted," Lawson told MediaGuardian.co.uk.

Lawson will write the column previously written by Jenkins, Ferdinand Mount and Robert Harris.

"Those are all really great writers, I'm not sure that I ever saw myself of that standard," he said.

"I have really enjoyed every minute of writing for the Independent and I am very pleased that will continue on Tuesdays because I think Roger Alton is doing a fantastic job."

Jenkins, who will continue to write two columns a week for the Guardian, takes up the three-year National Trust appointment next month, succeeding Sir William Proby.
