Britney Spears will make her first UK performance in four years on the reality TV talent contest The X Factor. The singer's spokesperson confirmed that she will appear as a special guest on the current series, although no date has been set.

The show's judge and producer Simon Cowell said yesterday that the pop singer would appear on the show to promote her album Circus, to be released this December. "We're absolutely thrilled to have her. I've always said this about Britney, that she's a hugely talented person. Everyone wants to work with her because she's a star. She's the number one booking in the world at the moment for a show."

Referring to the singer's recent spate of controversies, Cowell added: "The fact that she goes a bit crazy occasionally makes her more interesting. And, if she wants to shave her head before she comes on the show, she's welcome to. I don't care."

The ITV talent contest will enter the "boot camp" phase this weekend. Spears has previously announced that her sixth studio album Circus will be released on December 2, to coincide with her 27th birthday.
