The Los Angeles Lakers won't know the severity of center Andrew Bynum's right knee sprain until Monday, when a doctor reviews his MRI test, the National Basketball Association team said Sunday.

Bynum was hurt in the first quarter of Saturday's 115-98 victory at Memphis, when teammate Kobe Bryant crashed into him in a scramble for the ball.

Bynum had his knee examined Sunday in New York, but the Los Angeles Times reported that doctor David Altchek was out of town and had not yet had a chance to review the MRI.

The Lakers take on the Knicks in New York on Monday as their six-game road trip continues.

"I have to be optimistic," said Bynum, whose campaign ended at about the same point last season when he dislocated the kneecap on his left leg. "I just want to get back as soon as possible."

He is averaging 14.2 points and 8.4 rebounds this season.

"Hopefully, it's nothing too severe and he can get back soon and pick up where he left off," Lakers guard Kobe Bryant said.
