Azizulhasni Awang made sure Malaysia will walk away with at least two medals from the world track cycling championships after making the men's sprint final on Sunday.

Awang disposed of Australia's World Cup leader Shane Perkins in two straight matches and will now meet fancied Frenchman Gregory Bauge after he beat compatriot Kevin Sireau over two semi final legs.

Sireau will now meet Perkins in the bronze medal match although it remains to be seen how the big Frenchman recovers from a crash caused by a mistake at the tail end of his second leg, which almost also brought down Bauge.

Malaysia claimed an historic first medal from the world track cycling championships when Mohd Rizal Tisin won bronze in the men's kilometre.

Defending world sprint champion Sir Chris Hoy, also the Olympic champion, is not competing because of injury.
