Anaheim Ducks defenceman James Wisniewski has been released from a Los Angeles area hospital one day after being struck in the chest by a puck during a National Hockey League game.
Wisniewski suffered a bruised lung when hit in the chest by a slapshot from Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk during the second period of Anaheim's 2-1 win over the defending champion Red Wings, who trail the quarter-final playoff series with game four here on Thursday.
"He's moving forward. He's healing," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle told the Orange Country Register. "I don't know if the elbow helped, either."
After being struck, Wisniewski stumbled around the front of Anaheim's net trying to do what he could to prevent the Red Wings from scoring as play continued. To add insult to injury, Wisniewski was then hit by a vicious elbow to the face from Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom on the same play. When the whistle stopped play, Wisniewski fell to his knees, coughing up blood.
"I don't know if he (Holmstrom) meant to do it, but he comes around and smokes him in the face with his elbow," Wisniewski's teammate Ryan Whitney said. "It definitely wasn't a clean play."
There was no timetable about when Wisniewski might return to the Ducks' lineup.
