Capping months of struggle, Democrats have steered health care legislation atop President Barack Obama's agenda to the brink of a major advance in the Senate.

That comes after they made last-minute changes early Friday in the Senate Finance Committee to ease the impact on working-class families.

The bill is the most far-reaching overhaul of the health care system in decades, and aims to protect millions who have unreliable insurance coverage or none at all. It also is designed to slow the growth of health care costs.

A final committee vote in will occur early next week. There is no doubt about the outcome, since Democrats hold a 13-10 majority.

Majority Leader Harry Reid has announced a historic debate will begin at mid-month in the full Senate.
