A court in Poland has refused to punish a doctor charged with incurring losses to the state-run health system by writing prescriptions for uninsured homeless people.

The court in Krakow said Thursday the doctor, Ilona Rosiek-Konieczna, was driven by true compassion when she wrote up free prescriptions for poor people. It said the doctor's actions were not harmful to society and ended the proceedings without ordering any punishment.

The National Health Fund sought 101,000 zlotys ($37,000) from Rosiek-Konieczna, saying that it had to pay for the medicine she prescribed to uninsured people.

The doctor said on TVN24 Thursday that she knew she was breaking the law but had no other choice in her efforts to help homeless people.
