The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association says new car registrations in the European Union increased 12.9 percent in January compared with the same month a year ago.

The association said in a report Tuesday that the increase is attributable especially to fleet renewal schemes in a number of western European countries.

The association says that compared to January of 2008, registrations are down 17.3 percent.
