Austrian skier Hans Grugger has awakened completely from his induced coma, following a training crash two weeks ago, the Austrian ski federation (OeSV) said Tuesday.
"The awakening process is over," it announced in a statement.
"Hans Grugger was already able to exchange a few words with his family, however he will need to be kept under further care and supervision in the intensive care unit over the next few days.
"He still needs a lot of rest."
Doctors were carrying out exams Tuesday to determine the severity of Grugger's injuries, with results expected in the next few days, the OeSV added.
The 29-year-old Grugger had to undergo an operation on serious head injuries and was placed in an induced coma after suffering a horrific crash during training for the World Cup downhill on Kitzbuehel's famed Streif course on January 20.
He was taken off the ventilator on Monday and has since been breathing on his own.
