Semiconductor maker Advanced Micro Devices on Thursday said it had picked an executive who oversaw the global expansion of Chinese computer giant Lenovo to lead the US company.
Rory Read, 49, was appointed president and chief executive of the California-based chip maker, effective immediately, and will also join its board of directors, AMD said in a statement.
Read has been president and chief operating officer of Lenovo since 2009, and prior to that he led Lenovo's Americas group.
"Rory is a proven leader with an impressive record of driving profitable growth," AMD chairman Bruce Claflin said in the statement.
"As president and COO of Lenovo he helped take the company into dynamic new markets while growing market share and expanding profitability."
AMD is the world's second-largest producer of microprocessors for personal computers after US chip titan Intel. Its stock was up 2.1 percent at 1830 GMT after the release of the announcement.
