Australia won the toss and elected to bat in the first match of their one-day series against the West Indies at Arnos Vale on Friday.

West Indies haven't beaten Australia in a one-day international for six years while the Aussies have won 13 of the 14 matches played since 2006 with one clash a no-result.

The tourists go into the match on the back of a successful home summer where they defeated world champions India and then Sri Lanka in the Tri-Nations final.

But they are without injured captain Michael Clarke while veteran wicket-keeper Brad Haddin, who has been battling to save his international career, flew home on Thursday for unspecified "personal reasons".

Shane Watson takes over the captaincy.

West Indies gave a debut to opening batsman Johnson Charles while Australia's Twenty20 skipper George Bailey also starts for the first time.
