Chen Guangcheng, the blind Chinese lawyer held under house arrest for nearly 20 months after being jailed for four years, has escaped from his closely guarded home, according to his supporters.

"He was able to get out of his home on April 22 and his friends... escorted him to a safe location outside of (his home province of) Shandong," Bob Fu, a US-based activist in close contact with Chen, told AFP.

The claim was confirmed by a China-based supporter of the lawyer.
