A storm that pummeled through the city of St Louis knocked down a garden tent killing one man and injuring 100 people, at least three of them seriously, US television reported.

It was not clear whether the man who died was struck down by the tent or suffered a cardiac arrest during the incident, emergency officials told NBC affiliate station KSDK, noting that 20 people were hospitalized.

St Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson told KSDK a crowd of people inside the tent was celebrating baseball team the St Louis Cardinals victory over the Milwaukee Brewers when the storm hit.

"We've got severe injuries to quite a few people," he said, noting that live electricity wires were knocked on to the ground after the tent, which was tied to metal pipes, blew away.

"We don't like this type of building. It gives us nightmares, and as you can see, it caused one," Jenkerson added.
