Rookie netminder Braden Holtby made 30 saves and Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring in the first period as the Washington Capitals edged the New York Rangers 2-1 to force a game seven in their Eastern Conference series.
Jason Chimera also scored and Nicklas Backstrom had two assists for the Capitals who staved off elimination by leveling the series at three games each.
Forward Marian Gaborik scored during a frantic final minute for New York, who had pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist finished with 21 saves.
Game seven is scheduled for Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
