The book is shot through with loads of archival photos and pictures of memorabilia, but it isn't simply a pretty coffee table ornament - this is a true biography. Although its unwieldy dimensions aren't ideal for comfortable reading, the Def Jam story is worth sitting up for. Most of the major figures are on hand and add much more than two cents; from label employees - with extensive contributions by Rubin and Simmons - to the artists, to competitors in the industry, to fans weighing in about what Def Jam has meant over the years as it morphed from shoestring to bling and branched out into the television, fashion, and lifestyle worlds. And this being hip-hop, there are plenty of blunt statements - and few pulled punches - as different people tell the story from their perspective. A handsome addition to any hip-hop fan's library. The guys ate the feast - which included samples of Faison's whole menu - on the way to their next gig in Montreal.

Kanye West and Jay-Z weren't the only VIPs to experience Boston's fine dining through takeout on Monday night. Former President Bill Clinton, who was at the Barnes & Noble at the Prudential on Monday signing copies of his book ``Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy,'' took a vegan dish prepared at the Gallows on his flight out of Logan to Toronto. Gallows boss Rebecca Roth told us yesterday that Clinton heard about the Gallows through a friend of her fiance, Steve Gullo. After the connection was made, Roth wound up bringing the vegan plate - as well as four burgers for Clinton's entourage - onto the plane where she got to meet the former Prez. ``It was the coolest thing ever,'' Roth admitted, with a giggle. Asked whether she brought Clinton dessert, Roth joked, ``I should've brought him Fluffernutter but didn't.
