PASADENA, Calif. - Mark Johnson is a Grammy Award-winning engineer and producer who has worked with some big names in his career, including Paul Simon and R. Kelly. But it was the arresting voice of an unknown busker, Roger Ridley, in Santa Monica, Calif., that changed his life and inspired him to make the documentary ``Playing for Change: Peace Through Music,'' which airs today on WGBX (Channel 44) at 1 p.m. ``When I first saw Roger and I said, `What are you doing singing on the street with a voice like that?' He said, `I'm in the joy business,' '' said Johnson, speaking to the annual gathering of television reporters here this week. Johnson was impressed and embarked on a four-year journey to record street musicians around the world singing the same songs - including Ben E. King's ``Stand by Me'' and Bob Marley's ``War'' - to demonstrate how the power of music transcends language and culture. Koko Taylor knew how to make an indelible first impression. I first saw her in 1996 - back when I was an 18-year-old college student whose only exposure to the blues was from ``Women Be Wise,'' Bonnie Raitt's duet with Sippie Wallace - and knew right then that Taylor was the real deal. The Chicago blues icon, who died Wednesday at age 80 in her hometown, had recently had some kind of surgery and was wearing an eye patch when I saw her. It made her seem even more menacing than her ferocious voice already let on. Breaking through the front row, an overzealous fan decided to join her onstage for some dancing. Bad idea. ``Uh-uh. No,'' Taylor barked in the same coarse growl she had unleashed on hits like ``Wang Dang Doodle.'' ``Koko don't come here from Chicago to play that game!'' Bam.
