Christoph Waltz, an Austrian actor unknown to American audiences, and Mo'Nique, a stand-up comedian not known for her dramatic skills, were early winners at the 82d annual Academy Awards, held last night at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Waltz won best supporting actor for his performance as a merrily sadistic SS officer in Quentin Tarantino's revisionist World War II action film ``Inglourious Basterds.'' Accepting the award from presenter Penelope Cruz, Waltz said, ``Oscar and Penelope - that's an uber-bingo.'' Mo'Nique won best supporting actress for ``Precious: Based on the Novel `Push' by Sapphire,'' in which she played a nightmarishly abusive inner-city mother. A visibly emotional Mo'Nique thanked ``Gone With the Wind'' Oscar-winner Hattie McDaniels as a key groundbreaker and her husband, Sidney Hicks, for urging her to ``do what's right, not what's popular.''
