LONDON (Reuters) - Whether publicly funded or privately obtained public art can be as controversial as it is indefinable.

Statues by self-taught French sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle on Wednesday kicked off a series of outdoor exhibits by women artists that will use the streets of Washington as their gallery.

Exhibit in Philadelphia examines the lost legacy of women in Pop Art during the 1960s. As radical social changes rocked 1960s America, the contemporary art world remained largely a boys' club that largely ignored female Pop artists as their male counterparts grew to become icons of the era, according to a new exhibit.
