INDIANAPOLIS - A year ago, Colts linebacker Gary Brackett was inactive for his team's wild-card playoff loss at San Diego. He was still rehabbing a leg injury suffered at Cleveland Nov. 30, 2008, which forced him to miss the final four games of the regular season. ``I was probably a week or two away from coming back,'' Brackett recalled. ``It was tough seeing the guys prepare and not being a part of it.'' Despite his injury, Brackett did his best to help his teammates. ``I was definitely in the meeting room with those guys, trying to communicate with them the intensity of the situation,'' he said. ``The playoffs, obviously, are a win-or-go-home mentality, and you have to treat it as such.'' Although he was relegated to a sideline view of that 23-17 overtime loss to the Chargers, Brackett was determined not to be in the background this year when the Colts hosted Baltimore in the second round of the playoffs last Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium. Brackett was anything but inactive in

Manning throws 2 TD passes and Colts beats Ravens 20-3 to advance to AFC championship game. There's a price to pay for keeping the ball out of Peyton Manning's hands. Once he gets it, he doesn't give it back ? at least not until he's gotten the Indianapolis Colts plenty of points and a playoff win. In his first game since winning an unprecedented fourth NFL MVP award, Manning threw for two touchdowns Saturday night in a 20-3 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The Colts will host the AFC championship next Sunday against San Diego or the New York Jets.

Colts20Ravens3 INDIANAPOLIS - Evidently, the rest did not lead to rust. Although that seemed to be a lingering concern among Colts fans, who vehemently opposed the decision of first-year coach Jim Caldwell to forfeit a shot at a perfect season by resting his starters for the playoffs, everything wound up working as planned in last night's 20-3 second-round playoff victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The Lucas Oil Stadium crowd of 67,535, which booed Caldwell when he pulled his starters against the Jets, a move that resulted in Colts' first loss after a 14-0 start, went home satisfied last night after watching a well-rested and well-oiled offensive machine led by Peyton Manning. ``Our fans booed?'' said Caldwell, when asked if he felt all was forgiven for pulling his starters against the Jets Dec. 27. ``Let me tell you something, our fans were great today. They were outstanding. I think they were behind us and they were with us the entire time from start to finish.'' That's because Manni

INDIANAPOLIS - The Ravens have been down this road before. In fact, it was just a year ago. As a No. 6 seed in the AFC playoffs, Baltimore upset the top-seeded Titans to earn a berth in the AFC Championship game. Now the Ravens have the same seeding and similar stakes. Only this time, the Titans have been replaced by the Peyton Manning-led Indianapolis Colts. After dispatching the Tom Brady-led Patriots last Sunday, 33-14, the Ravens (10-7) face an even greater challenge in the Colts (14-2) and Manning, who was named the league's Most Valuable Player for the fourth time. ``Nobody's better in the game than Peyton Manning,'' said Ravens coach John Harbaugh. ``We played probably the other guy in that category last week [in Brady], and nobody's better than Peyton as far as recognizing defenses and making great decisions in terms of where to go with the ball and those kinds of things, getting them in the right play. [Manning's] probably the best that there's ever been at that.'' Manning, ho

After leading the Patriots defense through the maze of an up-and-down season, defensive coordinator Dean Pees stepped down yesterday after six seasons with the team. Pees became the Patriots defensive coordinator in 2006 after two years as their linebackers coach, leading a group that has not allowed more than 20 points per game in the last four seasons. But the 2009 season was a rough one for the defense, as veterans retired, injuries claimed key players, and inconsistency plagued the group. Pees, 60, said it is time for something else. ``I've chosen not to return,'' said Pees, whose contract will expire in a couple of weeks. ``I need some time to think about what I'm going to do. It could be a bunch of things. Welker named All-Pro, C6. ``But I'm not leaving to go to a specific job. I need some time to see where we're at. I don't think it's retirement, but I wouldn't rule it out.'' Pees also had health concerns in the last year. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer last summer and un
