Apr 11, 2006; Paris, FRANCE; A new study shows for the first time that breathing other people's smoke increases the risk of developing glucose intolerance, a precursor to diabetes, in which the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar. The long-term study involves more than 4,500 American men and women and has found that their incidence of glucose intolerance was directly related to exposure to tobacco smoke.
