* World turns off its lights for Earth Hour The four corners of the globe came together on Saturday (28Mar09) in a stance against climate change as the world's greatest cities dimmed their lights for Earth Hour. From the remote Chatham Islands in the South Pacific, to Seattle's Space Needle, the bright light's of some of the world's most iconic buildings switched off their beacons for 60 minutes. The third annual Earth Hour attracted its highest number of participants on 28 March (09) as countries came together to call for a change in the way modern-day life affects the planet. Lights were first dimmed in the Pacific Ocean and moved on to Australia, China, Russia, Europe, the U.K. and on to America - plunging famous landmarks into darkness including New York's Empire State Building, Paris' Eiffel Tower, the dome of St. Peters in the Vatican and the Christ the Redeemer statue on Mount Corcovado overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro.
