Anti-government demonstrators occupy the commerdial heart of Bangkok, sit or slip outside luxury shopping malls. The Red Shirt movement, known formally as the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship, consists largely of supporters of ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and activists who opposed a 2006 military coup that ousted him. Thailand's prime minister said he would dissolve Parliament in September, meeting a key demand of anti-government protesters, but only if they end their crippling occupation of Bangkok's commercial district.
