An Indian labourer washes giant statues of the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati (left) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kashi Ram in Lucknow, after state elections in March 2012. Police in northern India are probing alleged fraud in the construction of giant sculptures of elephants and low-caste political heroes that were the $1.2-billion pet projects of former leader Mayawati.
