Viacom paid $175 million to acquire Harmonix in 2006. In 2007, the company released the first game in its Rock Band franchise; it sold so well that Viacom paid a $150 million bonus to Harmonix cofounders Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy, who still run the company. Viacom also promised an additional $150 million if future versions of the game became big hits. That second bonus was never paid. The popularity of music games plunged in 2009.
