As the city's Nov. 3 election approaches, an already charged debate about birth control - which has pushed the subject of contraception distribution at Revere High School onto the ballot - has ratcheted up in recent days, with city officials and anti-contraception foes accusing each other of lying to the public. Since last spring, a small group of residents has lobbied to overturn the district's policy that allows contraception distribution at the high school health clinic. The policy was implemented in February, after Superintendent Paul Dakin, Mayor Tom Ambrosino, and Dr. Roger Pasinki - who directs the Massachusetts General Hospital-run high school heath center - reviewed statistics that showed an increasing number of students were sexually active and getting pregnant at the school. According to Dakin, 21 students at the school became pregnant in 2009, up from 13 in 2008.
